How Do You Design A Photo Wall? Start with YOU!

"To inspire you to be creative and surround yourself with things you love." This is how I described my goal in my very first blog post in 2016. Wow-wee! A tall order for this project, but with Heidi and Elizabeth's help, I think we nailed it! (Ha..wall styling pun intended.)

I'm referring to a project we did for the Schmitz family (repeat wall-stylers, you might remember them from this post.) Their girls, Heidi and Elizabeth were obvious inspiration, but they surprised me with their own clear vision for their basement wall.

I visited the family's home for an initial consultation, and while gathering color samples and a functionality wish-list, Heidi surprised me when she shared her design ideas: she wanted "white birch trees" and "nature walks" to be our inspiration. I loved it! It was not the direction I was going, but I loved it! With that, we scheduled a photo shoot with this space in mind. Here are some of those photos.

With these photos, Heidi's white birch idea, and my goal to inspire creativity and surround them with things they love, I went to work on their photo wall design.

"Be strong and courageous" seemed like a perfect verse to inspire the family. When I discovered this watercolor with a woodsy wreath, I was smitten! We matched the existing woodwork in the room, and Trevor built maple and shiplap frames. Artwork painted by the girls especially for this project was framed alongside their photographs. We added furniture to store toys (a must-have for anyone with kids and a basement family room).

Finally, it was time to accessorize! I added woodland decorations, a Trevor-turned wooden bowl for the girls' nature walk treasures, and a little 'Brian loves Jess' artwork I made for them. (Jess told me this was her favorite part!) I topped it all off with a birch branch (from Grandmas's property) mounted to the wall with leather straps and coordinating handmade bunting. You can see all the sweet details here...
